UPDATE: Ian Michael Smith Faces Felonies in Fatal Collision

Ian Michael Smith, a 20-year-old man from Archdale, NC, was originally charged with driving while impaired (DWI) and driving after consuming alcohol while under the age of 21 after a fatal collision.

Allegedly, Smith was drinking in downtown Greensboro during the early hours of March 25, 2011 when he got behind the wheel of a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse. He took a wrong-way, left-hand turn onto West Market Street and was signaled by a police officer to pull over. At that time, Smith accelerated to a great speed in an apparent attempt to flee.

According to the official accident report, Smith sped up to an estimated 112 mph when his car hit a Chevrolet pickup truck head-on. Marcial Aragon Colmillo and Juan Carlos Cortez both died at the scene.

Injured in the crash were Octavio Landin Acosta who was a passenger in the truck, and Amanda Leigh Tompkins, Smith’s passenger. Ian Michael Smith was also injured in the wreck.

Smith now faces additional, serious criminal charges: two counts of second-degree murder, careless and reckless driving, two counts of felony serious injury by motor vehicle, and two counts of felony death by motor vehicle. He is presently in the Guilford County Jail with a $500,200 bond.
