After An Accident, What Should I Do?

At Egerton Law, we have worked with many people who have experienced severe car accidents. We know that after an accident, you may feel disoriented, frightened and frozen.

It is not easy to think clearly after such a traumatic moment. However, if you can, you should follow a few important steps. Here, we have compiled a list of the steps you should take after a motor vehicle crash.

  1. Seek medical attention

You should get treatment from a doctor as soon as possible. If necessary, call an ambulance. Remember, not all injuries appear right away, so you should consult a doctor even if you think that you are fine. If you wait too long, the insurance companies will try to claim that your injuries are not serious enough to warrant compensation.

  1. Get contact information

Get the name, license plate number and insurance information of the other driver or drivers. Try to get the names and contact numbers of any witnesses as well. This will be critical to build your case.

  1. Attend every medical appointment

Follow the advice of your doctor and continue your course of treatment. Do not skip any appointments. Do not reassure your friends or family by downplaying the severity of your injuries. Insurance companies often use this information to avoid paying your damages.

  1. Consult an attorney

You should not discuss your case with anyone except your lawyer. This means no discussing it with your friends, family, co-workers or partner. Most importantly, do not discuss the accident with any insurance company representatives.
