Risperdal is a drug manufactured by Johnson & Johnson's subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals. This drug is a powerful antipsychotic approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in both adults and adolescents, and autism spectrum disorder in children and adolescents. The medication may also be used to treat ADHD, anxiety, sleep disorders and depression.
This medication has been linked to gynecomastia, breast growth in males, condition that may require surgery to correct. The manufacturer may have marketed the use of this drug in youth before achieving appropriate approval.
In July 2016 a jury awarded $70 Million to a Tennessee teenager that suffered from gynecomastia after using Risperdal. This is the fifth case tried. The pharmaceutical company has stated that they intend to challenge the verdict.
