Alarming numbers are in! During the statewide Labor Day “Booze It & Lose It” campaign, law enforcement officers in North Carolina cited 3,297 drivers for driving while impaired (DWI) between August 20 and September 6, 2010.
Across the state, there were more than 11,180 sobriety checkpoints during the campaign. The counties with the most DWI citations were Mecklenburg with 286, Wake with 215 and Robeson with 117.
In addition to issuing DWIs, officers gave seat belt and child passenger safety violations, speeding and drug charges. They apprehended 1,100 fugitives and recovered 113 stolen vehicles.
According to a press release from the NC Department of Transportation and the Governor’s Highway Safety Program, 111,668 traffic and criminal citations were handed out.
Last summer, a similar campaign, “Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker,” produced almost 1,300 DWI citations from June 28 through July 4, 2010.
