Victor Cruz-Orozco, 35, was riding a moped early Sunday, August 1, 2010, when he was struck by an SUV at the intersection of West Florida and Hardie streets in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Cruz-Orozco died later at Moses Cone hospital from injuries sustained in the accident.

Laree Michelle Johnson was arrested Tuesday and charged with felony death by motor vehicle and driving while impaired.

Cruz-Orozco was riding the moped west on West Florida Street when he was struck shortly after 2 a.m. Johnson, age 34, had been traveling east in her 1999 Honda Passport, and was trying to turn left from West Florida onto Hardie Street. According to the police report she allegedly failed to yield to the moped. The police diagram suggests that the victim was thrown across the SUV and landed on the other side.

Johnson, who was not injured, is also charged with failing to yield the right-of-way causing serious injury, and driving without a license.

Fatal accidents are always heartbreaking, and alleged alcohol use makes this one even more tragic and senseless. Our heart goes out to the family of the victim in their time of grief.
