Electronic cigaretttes have become incredibly popular in many circles, but most alarmingly they have been embraced by young people. While youth smoking has decreased over the last several decades, more and more children have been exposed to e-cigarettes like the popular JUUL by the time they finish middle school.

The sleek electronic devices are discrete and can easily be mistaken for a zip drive by unwitting parents. Early advertisements depicted young, attractive people vaping in colorful settings, reminiscent of earlier ads for cigarettes — the same ads that played a large part in Big Tobacco being held responsible for injuries and deaths of cigarette smokers.

JUUL pods, the component that contains the chemicals that are vaporized, originally came in a variety of flavors, such as mango and pineapple. The products are designed to deliver nicotine — often in much higher doses than traditional, or analog, cigarettes — without the harshness. By removing this harshness, the manufacturers made it easier for young people to get started vaping, even if they had never smoked cigarettes before.

News outlets have steadily covered the rise in severe lung diseases that have been linked to vaping. Because the e-cigarettes are so easy to inhale without coughing or feeling poorly, users report consuming multiple pods a day. One pod is said to be equivalent to an entire pack of cigarettes. It is no wonder, then, that exposure to chemicals at this high rate is causing lung diseases after just a few years of use.

Addiction is another effect caused by the high nicotine content without the bad initial effects. Young people can consume nicotine products and don’t feel like it is having a negative impact on their health. Before long they are hooked, and it becomes nearly impossible to quit. Ironically, e-cigarettes have been touted as beneficial for those who need help quitting analog cigarettes.

If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction or illness after using JUUL, contact an attorney to discuss your possible claim. Investigations into the manufacturers and advertisers are ongoing, and new developments arise daily. Call us at 336-273-0508 to find out if we can help you.
