A single-car wreck on U.S. 421 near Pleasant Garden, NC ended the life of Manuel Castillo Alvarez, 27, of High Point, during the evening of October 17, 2010. According to the Highway Patrol’s accident report, Mr. Alvarez was ejected from the sun roof of a 2000 Volkswagen when he lost control of the vehicle, exited the road to the right and hit a tree. Mr. Alvarez was speeding at 80mph through a 55mph when the accident occurred. Alcohol is suspected to have been a factor.

Mr. Alvarez was not alone in the car. Passenger Mark Loza, 12, of High Point, was also in the vehicle when it crashed. Mark was wearing his seat belt—a precaution that likely saved his life. The Greensboro News & Record reports that Mark hurt his hand in the crash and “complained of general soreness,” but thankfully, he survived this fatal wreck without serious physical injuries.
