Essure is a permanent mechanism for birth control that is implanted in the patient's fallopian tubes. It consists of two metal coils and it is manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received over 5,000 reports about Essure and injuries caused by this device. Some of the reported injuries include autoimmune diseases, perforated organs and severe pelvic pain.
Cases against the manufacturer are currently pending in California and Pennsylvania.
